There are not animal or plants that pose danger to human life. The country is inhabited by around 900 types of fish, mostly edible, almost 300 types of bird, approximately 4 000 variety of molluscs and almost 7 000 insects, with the smallest species in the world: the toad (Sminthillus limbatus) and the been hummingbird (Mellisuga helenae). More than 8 000 species confirm the plants life, are considered among the most beautiful and better preserved of the planet .

White Mariposa or Butterfly Jasmine. An endemic jasmine species used by the Cuban women in the wars of independence to pass messages to the battlefields. It symbolizes purity, rebelliousness and independence. It grows in the humid places as bank of rivers and lagoons, but it is also cultivated in yards and gardens. |
